HCS Paving offers VDOT and MDSHA approved asphalt mixes of all sizes and types and can provide specialized mixes for any project
9.5mm asphalt is the most common type of asphalt. when you look at a road or parking lot surface paved within the last 15 years most likely it was paved with this material. so why is it so common? Because it is made with smaller stones and more sand to allow for a smoother surface overall it is great for overlays and surface layers and is definitely prettier than other mixes but it need a solid foundation beneath it so it is not recommended to be used direct over unsettled stone bases
12.5mm asphalt is larger than 9.5mm but is still classified as a surface mix or sometimes and intermediate mix. it is not as commonly used but it does have many advantages mainly being that the larger stones provide a higher tensile strength for the asphalt while still being smooth and tight enough to keep out water and provide a smooth ride. If your driveway is currently fresh gravel it is recommended to use a 12.5mm layer base before installing a top layer but it also can be used by itself
these larger base asphalt mixes and specialty mixes are typically reserved for large roadways, parking lots and airport runways as a base material they MUST be paved over with a top coat of either 9.5 or 12.5 asphalt these larger stones proved great strength but they do not compact tight enough for regular traffic or to keep water out. over the years we have seen instances where these products are left without the topcoat in that case these asphalts will have total base failure within 2 years
Along with asphalt services we also offer Recycled asphalt millings with added rejuvenator, Tar and chip (chipseal), and oil based sealcoating in Maryland and northern Virginia
instead of just dump and go operations we offer full service millings installation and rejuvenation. heated installed with paving crews rolled with our 5 ton vibratory roller and then coated with our patented millings rejuvenator treatment to add life to the millings the final results are shocking when you consider this service is less than half the cost of hot asphalt installation. its the perfect solution for farms, winery’s, and shared lanes across Maryland and Virginia.
Tar and Chip, Sometimes called Chipseal is almost a lost art. Many companies in MD and VA dont have the equipment or crew to do chipseal. this makes sense because it is a very niche product. most county roads used to be chipseal but have been phased out with asphalt but it does still have a purpose it is a great economical solution for long lanes especially wineries and equestrian centers as it can be stylized with a rustic look it gives the look and feel of gravel but it remains locked in place
It doesn’t get any better oil based equinox sealant straight from the seaboard asphalt plant in Baltimore. This coating does wonders for old, gray, dried out and oxidized driveways. this isnt your typical sealant, this is a liquid asphalt cutback that puts all of the oils that have burned out of your driveway right back into it. the idea is simple asphalt driveways are made of three component sand, aggregate and of course the liquid asphalt. when it turns gray it needs oil to hold it together
Proudly serving Maryland and Virginia
